Day 3: My Tent Was A-Rocking

Fred Canyon (mile 32) to mile 47.8

After 9 miles today the town of Mt Laguna, with a campground, outfitter and most importantly a restaurant, was just a mile detour.  Many hikers  take a day off there.  I could not resist and went in for a cheeseburger.  Had a nice lunch with Marco and Katrine.  Stopped at the outfitter and got a gasket that fixed my water filter.

After that Marco and I headed out.  Mt Laguna is like an oasis in the desert.  At 6,000 feet it has stands of tall pines that were a welcome break from the scrubby growth in the desert. As we climbed the wind picked up.  In one pass it was so strong it was hard to stand.   We camped just off the top of a ridge and had a tough time setting up tents because of the wind.  It was at about 5,500 feet and had an awesome view.  I thought it was a great idea, then through the night the wind got worse.  A little wind is nice, this wasn’t.  I was afraid the tent poles would break and the noise and rocking kept me awake most of the night.   So yes, my tent was a-rocking but only because the wind came a-knocking.
